This Week’s Actions & Events // Updates from Together We Will San José // September 4, 2017
Thanks for subscribing to TWW San José’s email newsletter! Each week, we’ll be sharing important ways you can take action to resist the Trump Agenda, upcoming events in Silicon Valley, member updates, and more.
We hope you are having a wonderful holiday weekend with family & friends! If you want to start your day with a little Labor-related resistance action, check our calendar down below for a local event hosted by our friends (and monthly meeting host), SEIU 521.
MEMBER NEWS & UPDATES
Asking Assemblymember Evan Low to Stand Up for Our California Values: Our TWWSJ Immigration Action Group has been closely engaged in the debate around SB-54, the California Values Act. Many believe this bill would prevent our state & local governments from doing the work of federal immigration enforcement and keep our local tax dollars from supporting the President’s deportation machine. We were disappointed to learn that our local Assemblymember Evan Low had not taken a stance on this important bill so a group set up a meeting with Low’s staff at his Cupertino District office. They were disappointed he refused to take a stance, pending the Governor’s decision on whether or not to move it forward, but they were glad to talk and will continue to push him to take a stance and speak up for his most vulnerable constituents. Helping the Homeless in our Community:Update & volunteer opportunity from member Brooke Barnett Strishock: “Yesterday my family and I had the opportunity to volunteer with Sleeping Bags for the Homeless of Silicon Valley. It was an amazing experience and I’m so grateful to have been able to bring my 2 young children along. We met so many incredible people both in the organization and at the homeless camp that we visited. The organization takes any and all donations (food, drinks, clothes, toiletries, blankets, tarps, etc), divides them up equally between the number of camps they plan to visit that day and then takes them out for delivery. They have an event every other Saturday. I will definitely plan to go again and I’d be happy to set up an event for us to go as a larger group if anyone else is interested.” Join the conversation on Facebook.
Bake for the Resistance: Next Sunday, our TWWSJ EARTH Action group is doing a bake sale in Downtown Campbell to benefit resistance to Trump’s border wall in two key conservation zones – the National Butterfly Center & the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge. The planned wall runs through both of the preserves and it would disrupt important conservation efforts and wildlife migration. If you are interested in donating a baked item, please sign up via the link on the Facebook invite or contact Erin S.
SAVE THE DATE: OUR SEPTEMBER MEETING
Our next monthly meetings is coming up on Wednesday, September 13. Please like & share the Facebook Invite. The room opens at 6:30, new member orientation at 6:45, and meeting starts at 7pm. Guest speaker will be a representative from Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence (thanks to our Women’s Health & Safety Action Group for setting this up!) We’ll also be collecting used Eclipse Glasses to donate to Astronomers Without Borders, an organization that will be sending them to low-income schools in Latin America to protect their students during the 2019 eclipse. We hope to see you there!
1. Call your Members of Congress
Call Senator Feinstein: (202) 224-3841 or (415) 393-0707
“I am _____, a concerned constituent calling from (zip) because Senator Feinstein is on both the Senate Intelligence Committeee as well as the ranking minority member Senate Judiciary Committee. I would like these two key committees to hold public hearings on Russia’s actions during the 2016 elections. Hearings should include public testimony, under oath from Jared Kushner, Paul Manafort, Donald Trump Jr., Jeff Sessions, and Glenn Simpson.
I also have concerns about her comments at the Commonwealth Club that Trump could change to become a good president. When in this man’s life have we ever seen evidence that he will be something different?”
Call Senator Harris: (202) 224-3553 or (415) 355-9041
“I am _____, a concerned constituent calling from (zip) because Senator Harris is on the Senate Intelligence Committee. I would like this key committee to hold public hearings on Russia’s actions during the 2016 elections. Hearings should include public testimony, under oath from Jared Kushner, Paul Manafort, Donald Trump Jr., Jeff Sessions, and Glenn Simpson.”
Call your US Representative:
Zoe Lofgren: (202) 225-3072 or (408) 271-8700 / Ro Khanna: (202) 225-2631 or (408) 436-2720 / Anna Eshoo: (202) 225-8104 or (408) 245-2339
“I’m a constituent from (zip). I have three quick statements for Rep. ____.
First, I want to thank Rep. ____ for co-sponsoring the American Hope Act which gives those with DACA and others who arrived in the US as children a path to permanent legal status and eventual citizenship.
I’m also outraged that Trump issued a pardon of former sheriff Joe Arpaio. I ask that Rep. ___ publicly condemn this blatant abuse of power and dangerous acceptance of corrupt, racist law enforcement officials.
Finally, I’m asking Rep. ____ to set partisan issues aside to pass a robust Hurricane Harvey disaster relief fund and oppose any spending on a US-Mexico border wall.”
2. Call Governor Brown & Ask Him to Support a STRONG SB-54
Governor Brown and party leadership are deciding right now whether to amend SB-54 to make it cover fewer people. We have to push for the bill to remain strong & go to the Assembly in it’s current form.
Please call him (916-445-2841) and use this script :
“My name is _____, and I am calling to ask Gov Brown to support a strong California Values Act, SB54, in its current form. We cannot use CA’s resources to help the Trump administration deport our friends & neighbors! Will the Governor support a strong CA Values Act?
