1. Call your local House Representative to Prevent The Prevent The Deportation Of Nonviolent Undocumented Immigrants

Background: On Tuesday, September 12th, Trump’s supporters in the House of Representatives will attempt to ram through H.R.3697, the so-called “Criminal Alien Gang Member Removal Act.” This bill’s misleading title hides its malicious content: it amends the Immigration and Nationality Act to give the Department of Homeland Security sweeping authority to designate who is (or was, no matter how many years ago) in a gang, and to deport them without challenge. For example, undocumented immigrants who commit “immigration offenses” under section 274 of the Immigration and Nationality Act – including harboring another undocumented immigrant – would be considered gang members. Make no mistake: this bill creates a legal authority to launch a wave of deportations that cannot be challenged.

Script:

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from San Jose.
I’m calling to express my strong opposition to H.R.3697, the so-called “Criminal Alien Gang Member Removal Act,” which would label many non-violent undocumented immigrants as gang members and give the Department of Homeland Security the power to deport them without challenge. Rep ___________ must vote NO on this undemocratic and immoral bill.
Thank you for your hard work answering the phones.

  • Anna Eshoo: (202) 225-8104 or (408) 245-23391

2. Call your House representative to oppose drastic tax cuts for the rich

Background: House Republicans have proposed a budget that dramatically cuts funding for essential services like Medicaid, Medicare, Meals on Wheels, and Social Security disability programs. If this budget is passed, middle and working class Americans will suffer, especially the older adults, children, and people with disabilities who depend on programs like Medicaid.

Script:

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from San Jose. I’m calling in opposition to any House budget proposal that makes cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, public education, and other services. Tax cuts for the wealthy at the expense of hardworking families is unacceptable. Thank you for your time.

  • Anna Eshoo: (202) 225-8104 or (408) 245-2339

3. Request Attorney General Jeff Sessions undergo a lie-detector test like the National Security Council.

Background: Attorney General Jeff Sessions is considering having all of the National Security Council undergo a lie-detector test: http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/350016-sessions-mulling-lie-detector-test-for-entire-nsc-staff-report

Since it is pretty clear that he perjured himself during a Congressional hearing, let’s ask him to go first: https://www.justice.gov/contact-us

4. Tell Your Members Of Congress To Defend Daca by Influencing other Moc on DACA’s Positive Contributions To The Nation

Background: Indivisible Guide has created a new tool shows how many DREAMers are in each state, and the amount of money they contribute in state and local taxes http://bit.ly/2uZyz1b.
There are 237,940 DACA recipients in California alone, and each year they contribute $534,124,000 in State and local taxes. Now it’s up to your representatives in Congress to stand up to Trump’s hateful decision and secure the futures of DACA recipients with a legislative fix: The DREAM Act (S.1615 / H.R.3440).

DACA works, and it has improved the lives of its recipients and their families. Among DACA recipients:

  • 95% are currently working or in school
  • 48% got a job with better working conditions
  • 63% got a better paying job
  • 90% got a driver’s license or state ID
  • 54% bought their first car
  • 12% bought their first home

Call our MoC to demand that they support a clean DREAM Act in both the House and Senate and push other MoC to do the same.

Script:

Hello! My name is [name] and I’m calling from [place in state]. I’m happy that the [Senator/Representative] has signed on as a co-sponsor to the bipartisan DREAM Act. Please tell her/him that as her/his constituent here in [part of State], I expect them to go the extra mile on this bill, and encourage other MoC to get on the right side of history with this issue. It is inhumane to tear away young people who are American in every way except on paper—and our economy would take a huge hit if they are forced to leave their jobs. In California alone DACA recipients pay over $500,000,000 in taxes.

5. Call the state regarding SB 623 – to provide all Californians have access to safe and affordable drinking water.

Thank you to TWWSJ member Erin Salter for providing this C2A.

Background: SB 623 would provide an ongoing source of funding to ensure all Californians have access to safe and affordable drinking water. More than 300 communities and one million Californians are exposed to unsafe drinking water from the taps in their homes, schools, and communities each year. Please call your Assemblymember today to urge their support for SB623 and safe, affordable drinking water.

Script:

Hi, I am calling to ask Assemblymember [Name] to support SB 623 and ensure safe, affordable drinking water for all Californians.

Contact info: Dial 559-206-3602, enter your zip code, and you will be connected with your Assemblymember.

Tell us how it goes in the comments below! Thanks for your activism – it matters!

Don’t forget you can contact your Senators and Representatives through phone (Call 1-844-6-RESIST), email (http://democracy.io), or text (text “Resist” to 50409).
