Calls to Action for Thursday, December 21

TAKE ACTION by signing the letter to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Speaker Paul Ryan to tell them the GOP Tax Scam is bad for students, borrowers, and families.

Sign the petition: Tell Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan: ‘The GOP Tax Scam is a disaster for students and borrowers’ (Student Debt Crisis)

C2A Republicans just gave billionaires a present for the holidays by passing the GOP Tax Scam. The House and Senate completed their final vote, now the bill is on its way to the president’s desk. We have to hold Congress accountable. Hard working people, like us, know that increasing taxes on families is not a win. The only way to shake up lawmakers who supported the disastrous tax bill is by denying them of their so-called “victory.” It’s up to us to make sure the GOP doesn’t get away with their tax scam. That is why we need as many of you as possible to share your voice and tell them you oppose politicians who sold out students in favor of billionaires.

TAKE ACTION by calling Senator Schumer and Minority Leader Pelosi and telling them:

“Please don’t sell out Dreamers! These law-abiding immigrants are helping our economy and they deserve a path to citizenship.”

  • Sen. Charles E. Schumer: (202) 224-6542
  • Rep. Nancy Pelosi: (202) 225-4965

C2A Trump has slashed legal protections for 800,000 Dreamers — young undocumented immigrants.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION There are many reasons why providing DACA recipients a path to citizenship is good for America. Humanitarian reasons lead the long list of why DACA recipients deserve a welcome mat from us. I would like to talk about economic reasons as well. There are around 800,000 undocumented young immigrants using the DACA program. After obtaining an education, these immigrants are entering the workforce, buying goods, pursuing higher educations to get better jobs to make more money, paying taxes, and becoming entrepreneurs.

All of these actions have helped grow the United States’ economy, benefiting them and you. A study by the Center for American Progress has “calculated that ending DACA would wipe away at least $433.4 billion from the U.S. gross domestic product, or GDP, cumulatively over a decade.” Ending DACA would have a drastic negative effect on the economy, which would directly harm the average American’s economic well-being.

Call to Action for Thursday, December 14

Today’s C2A generated based on letters from Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren.

TAKE ACTION by calling U.S. Senators and demand that Doug Jones be seated in the U.S. Senate now, without obstruction or “political positioning” delays.

Contact info here: Senators of the 115th Congress Directory

Here is a list of the Republican senators that have opposed or have expressed concerns about the current bill:

  • Bob Corker of Tennessee: (202) 224-3344
  • Jeff Flake of Arizona: (202) 224-4521
  • James Lankford of Oklahoma: (202) 224-5754
  • Jerry Moran of Kansas: (202) 224-6521
  • Susan Collins of Maine: (202) 224-2523
  • Ron Johnson of Wisconsin: (202) 224-5323
  • Steve Daines of Montana: (202) 224-2651

Suggested script:

“I am a concerned constitute and I am calling to demand that Doug Jones be seated in the U.S. Senate before voting again on the tax bill and any other important legislative priorities. Democracy matters – especially when it’s inconvenient.”

C2A A few short weeks ago, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said we should “let the people of Alabama make the call” in the race for the seat vacated by Jeff Sessions. On December 12, 2017, the people of Alabama rejected the politics of bigotry and hate and elected progressive Democrat Doug Jones to the U.S. Senate. It was a historic night and a powerful reminder that Democrats can win anywhere in 2018. However, right now, the issue is Republicans need to give the people of Alabama their voice in the Senate. Instead, Republican leaders are planning to wait until January to seat Doug Jones — after we vote again on their tax plan. There is no reason other than craven political opportunism to delay seating Doug and that’s why we need to put pressure on the Republicans now.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION Republicans say they have a final tax deal. Democrats haven’t seen it (the Republicans aren’t sharing it). But the Senate could be voting on it within the next couple of days . There’s no reason to ram through that kind of massive restructuring of our economic policy that could affect the lives of every single American for a generation or more before Alabama gets its new senator. No reason that is, unless Republicans are scared that their tax deal can’t withstand a couple more weeks of public scrutiny.

In 2010 another vote also came during the middle of a historically important policy debate happening in Washington – health care. A lot of people thought Democrats should ram the Affordable Care Act through Congress before Scott Brown could be seated. The Republicans went on and on (and on and on) talking about how unfair that would be, how corrupt that would be, and how anti-democratic that would be. Mitch McConnell said it would be “gamesmanship.” Democrats rejected the idea of ramming through the bill before Scott Brown could take his seat in the Senate. The Democrats made it clear that democracy matters – even when it means that it might slow down a political party’s agenda. Their actions sent a clear message that democracy matters – even when a Senate seat held for decades by a liberal lion is taken over by a conservative.

URGENT Call to Action for Wednesday, December 13

TAKE ACTION by taking less than a minute out of your day to save #NetNeutrality! We only have one (1) day to fight the FCC and the repeal of #NetNeutrality! Thanks to John Oliver there’s a SUPER easy way to do this NOW.

  1. Go to (the shortcut John Oliver made to the hard-to-find FCC comment page)
  2. Click on the 17-108 link (Restoring Internet Freedom)
  3. Click on “+express” (It’s on the left column, a little tough to find.)
  4. Be sure to hit “ENTER” after you put in your name and information in each field, so that it registers as an entry.
  5. In the comment section write, “I strongly support net neutrality backed by Title 2 oversight of ISPs.”
  6. Click to submit, done. Make sure you hit submit at the end!

Please share your own Confirmation # with friends along with this post to spread the word!

C2A Do you enjoy Netflix? Do you find yourself spending too much time on FB? If net neutrality goes away, our Internet bills go up and we give power to companies like Comcast and Spectrum.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION The Federal Communications Commission will vote Thursday on a measure that would completely gut regulations to internet providers and open the door for net neutrality to be destroyed. The vote will likely make it easier for companies such as Verizon and Comcast to start divvying up the internet and turn it into something more akin to cable TV (i.e., something more expensive, fragmented, and more focused on making as much money as possible). The vote will likely ensure no regulator can do anything to stop these companies.

Calls to Action for Monday, December 11

Lots of critical issues this week. Please call about these 3 today:

1. THIS MORNING (Mon. 12/11): Call Sens. Feinstein and Harris to oppose the nomination of Leonard Steven Grasz, of Nebraska, to be United States Circuit Judge for the Eighth Circuit — a lifetime appointment. Grasz’s record stands in opposition to the rights of women and the LGBTQ community. Contact:

  • Sen. Dianne Feinstein: (202) 224-3841
  • Sen. Kamala Harris: (202) 224-3553

2. Make noise about Net Neutrality — VOTE IS THIS WEEK. Use this shortcut to the comment page on the FCC website:

  1. Let’s go to (thanks, John Oliver!)
  2. Click on the “17-108” option which is labeled “Restoring Internet Freedom”
  3. Click on “Express” (vs. New Filing) on the left
  4. Enter name and info and in the comment section, add “I strongly support net neutrality backed by Title 2 oversight of ISPs” and *your own comment too*
  5. Then continue to the review screen and review
  6. Hit “submit”.

While you’re add it, call/email/tweet at the three Commissioners who have not committed to a no vote:

  • Ajit Pai: 202-518-7399 / email: / Twitter: @AjitPaiFCC
  • Michael O’Rielly: 301-657-9092 / email: / Twitter @mikeofcc
  • Brendan Carr: 202-719-7305 / email: / Twitter: @BrendanCarrFCC

THEN, Call your Reps. and ask them to support the Save Net Neutrality act (H.R. 4585), which would prevent the FCC from using the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) to eliminate the existing Net Neutrality policy. This is a procedural fix, not a policy one. Contact:

  • Rep. Zoe Lofgren: (202) 225-3072
  • Rep. Ro Khanna: (202) 225-2631
  • Rep. Anna Eshoo: (202) 225-8104

3. Election Day in Alabama is TOMORROW. If Roy Moore’s homophobia, belief that the U.S. was great under slavery, and history of sexual assault isn’t enough to keep him out of the Senate, how about his contempt for the rule of law and the Constitution? Let’s get out the vote for Doug Jones! Here are some approved ways we can help:

  • Sign up to textbank here (works via Hustle system)
  • Sign up to phonebank here (works via Hubdialer system)

Thanks for all you do. It matters. Let us know how it goes in the comments below. Don’t forget — if you don’t like making phone calls, you can email, fax, or text Congress! Email:; Fax:; Text using Resistbot: Type RESIST to 50409.
