MEMBER NEWS & UPDATES

  • HEALTHCARE! We had a big win last night with the Senate voting down the repeal of the Affordable Care Act! There is no doubt that the resistance – OUR resistance – our calls and emails and rallies and endless pressure – made that happen and saved healthcare of 24 million people. This fight is certainly not over, attacks on the ACA, Medicaid, Medicare, and Planned Parenthood will continue as the GOP seeks to whittle away these programs bit by bit, but take solace in knowing we’re making a difference.
  • Great conversation in our Facebook group: What kind of world do you want to live in? What are you fighting for? Share your thoughts here.
  • Care about protecting the environment and stopping climate change? Our TWWSJ EARTH Action Team is looking for new members to help organize our environmental actions. Sign up for it (and other TWWSJ action teams) here: http://bit.ly/twwsj-action-teams
  • Our next two monthly meetings are: Tuesday, August 8 and Wednesday, September 13. As always, room opens at 6:30, new member orientation at 6:45, and meeting starts at 7pm. We hope to see you!

TAKE ACTION

1. Thank the Senators who voted down the “Skinny Repeal” of the ACA last night, by the slimmest of margins.

Susan Collins (R-Maine), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), John McCain (R-Arizona), and of course our own Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris.

Contact info for district offices (national phones expected to be busy): John McCain: (928) 445-0833, (602) 952-2410, or (520) 670-6334 / Lisa Murkowski: (907) 271-3735, (907) 456-0233, (907) 586-7277,(907) 376-7665, (907) 262-4220, or (907) 225-6880 / Susan Collins: (207) 780-3575, (207) 945-0417, (207) 622-8414, (207) 493-7873, (207) 784-6969, or (207) 283-1101 / Kamala Harris: (202) 224-3553 or (415) 355-9041 / Dianne Feinstein (202) 224-3841 or (415) 393-0707. Thank the GOP senators for their courage and for upholding the interests of their constituents and all Americans over party, and thank our senators for their ongoing persistence in fighting for all Californians.

2. Call Senator Feinstein & Harris and urge them to reject the nomination of Sam Clovis as the Department of Agriculture’s Chief Scientist.

Sam Clovis is not a scientist; he’s a longtime Trump campaign aide an a leading climate change denier. Contact Senator Harris: (202) 224-3553 or (415) 355-9041 and Senator Feinstein (202) 224-3841 or (415) 393-0707, and say this: “Hello, my name is ___ and I’m a constituent from (zip). I am asking the Senator to reject the nomination of Sam Clovis to serve as the Department of Agriculture’s undersecretary of research, education and economics. By statute, this position requires a distinguished scientist with specialized training or significant experience in agricultural research, education, and economics. Mr Clovis’s career as a conservative talk show host does not meet that standard. Thank you.”

3. Contact your Members of Congress to a) decry Trump’s attack on transgender servicepeople, and/or b) express your budget priorities, especially for affordable housing and against budget cuts that would fuel the deportation machine.

Contact Zoe Lofgren: (202) 225-3072 or (408) 271-8700; Ro Khanna: (202) 225-2631 or (408) 436-2720; Anna Eshoo: (202) 225-8104 or (408) 245-2339; or your Representative, and use the talking points/script that matter most to you:

About transgender servicepeople: “I’m calling to ask Rep. ___ to denounce Donald Trump’s recent Twitter announcement that the US military will no longer allow transgender troops to serve. Transgender Americans should have the right to serve their country while receiving the gender confirmation therapy they need. It is unacceptable for Trump to strip them of these rights in a series of tweets.” (5 Calls)

About affordable housing: 5 Calls is asking people to advocate for lifting the low spending caps on federal housing programs and fully invest in affordable housing resources. Use this script: “I urge Rep. ___ to protect and expand investments in affordable housing and community development. HUD and USDA affordable housing programs are already underfunded and additional cuts would hurt millions of low income people with low incomes, including seniors, people with disabilities, veterans, families with children, and people experiencing homelessness. Instead of making harmful cuts, please work with your colleagues to lift the spending caps on critical domestic programs like those at HUD and USDA.”

About mass deportations: Indivisible has released a guide pointing out that Trump’s budget slashes funding for education, healthcare, the environment, etc., largely to fuel the border wall, detention facilities, and other components of his anti-immigrant program. (https://www.indivisibleguide.com/…/defund-trumps-mass-depo…/). You can use this script: “I urge Rep. ____ to oppose any budget that includes increases to Trump’s deportation force or any funding for Trump’s mass deportation agenda. We need a federal budget that invests in families, not fear.”

4. Make a public comment to protect your drinking water!

Yesterday the Trump Administration formally proposed withdrawing the Clean Water Rule, which protects the drinking water sources for one in three Americans by protecting specific small streams and wetlands. The inclusion of the proposal in the Federal Register triggers a 30-day public comment period.

American Rivers will walk you through making a public comment here: https://act.americanrivers.org/page/1597/action/1

Calls to Action for July 28

Your weekend edition of TWWSJ’s Call to Action! Please take a few minutes to act on the issues that mean the most to you: express your thanks for how senators voted on health care, speak out on a pivotal nomination for the Dept. of Agriculture, file a public comment to protect clean drinking water as well as critical streams and wetlands, and speak out on budget priorities and against Trump’s attack on transgender troops.

1. Thank the Senators who voted down the “Skinny Repeal” of the ACA last night, by the slimmest 51-49 margins. Contact info for district offices (national phones expected to be busy):

  • Kamala Harris (D-California): (202) 224-3841 or (415) 393-0707

Thank the GOP senators for their courage and for upholding the interests of their constituents and all Americans over party, and thank our senators for their ongoing persistence in fighting for all Californians. (With thanks to Maureen Medeiros!)

2. Urge your senators to reject the nomination of Sam Clovis as the Department of Agriculture’s Chief Scientist. Clovis is not a scientist; he’s a longtime Trump campaign aide an a leading climate change denier.

Calls to Action for Tuesday, July 25

2 critical issues being voted on today!

SENATE VOTE TODAY ON HEALTH CARE.

In about 3 hours the Senate is voting on a Motion to Proceed (MTP), the introductory vote that authorizes the Senate to begin debate on the healthcare bill. 50 votes are needed to pass the MTP, so if the MTP fails on the Senate floor, the Republican bill will be dead in its tracks. If the MTP passes, there will be a day or two of debate, amendments, etc. 5 Calls says: “If the GOP gets its way, the final bill will pass by the end of the week in a form unseen by the public and without an updated CBO score.” So this is a Do or Die week on health care.

Today, please:

  1. Ask your friends in red states to call their Republican senators and use this script from 5 Calls: “I’m calling today to voice my strong opposition to the repeal of the Affordable Care Act. I urge the senator to vote against the Motion to Proceed, and instead work in a bipartisan manner to fix the ACA, using traditional Senate processes such as open hearings and expert testimony. Thank you for your time.”
  2. Call Senators Feinstein and Harris and say “I’m calling to urge the Senator to do everything in her power to stop the repeal of the ACA, including withholding consent and filibustering by amendment. Please thank the senator for all her work.”

Contact info:

  • Senator Harris: (202) 224-3553 or (415) 355-9041
  • Senator Feinstein (202) 224-3841 or (415) 393-0707

HOUSE VOTE TODAY ON CONSUMER PROTECTIONS

The House votes TODAY on a brand new rule created by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau that allows consumers to bypass arbitration clauses and join class action lawsuits against banks and other financial institutions. Republicans seek to overturn this protection by passing H.J. Res 111. Check out 5 Calls excellent summary on why banks want to avoid class actions: https://5calls.org/issue/rectLxGWX61FOUh2k

Please call your Representative and urge them to vote no on H.J. Res 111 with this script from Moms & Friends on the Left:

I’m a constituent calling from X, and I’m urging the Congresswoman/man to look out for consumers by keeping the new class action lawsuit rule from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Please vote against HJR 111.

Contact info:

  • Zoe Lofgren: (202) 225-3072 or (408) 271-8700
  • Ro Khanna: (202) 225-2631 or (408) 436-2720
  • Anna Eshoo: (202) 225-8104 or (408) 245-2339

Calls to Action for Monday, July 24

Daily resistance matters! Remember, as one of our terrific members pointed out, Congressional staffers “basically just tag the topic you are calling about – you don’t need to craft a long message.”

Take action today on:

  1. Health care and fossil fuels (Voting expected this week!)
  2. Voting rights
  3. Affordable housing in California
  4. Net neutrality
  5. Bee-harming pesticides (Last day to comment!)

1. Contact your Senators about (what else?) health care and, while you’re at it, a bill to increase our dependence on fossil fuel (VOTES EXPECTED IMMINENTLY).

  • Senator Harris: (202) 224-3553 or (415) 355-9041
  • Senator Feinstein (202) 224-3841 or (415) 393-0707

Insanely, on Tuesday the Senate is likely to vote for an as-yet-unknown health care bill that may be a straight repeal of the ACA or may be a plan no one has yet seen. California Senators have been strong voices against this attempt to repeal. Help them out. Use this script: “Hi, I’m from [ZIP] and I want to thank the Senator for opposing the Republican attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act. I’m counting on her to use every tactic at her disposal to also delay and defeat the bill, including aggressively obstructing all Senate business until the GOP permanently abandons their effort to kill the ACA. Thank you.”

But wait! Don’t hang up yet. Add this [courtesy of Jen Hoffman/Americans of Conscience]: “While I have you on the phone, I want to express my opposition to S. 1460, the massive energy bill being rushed through the Senate. It’s opposed by conservation, water, farming, and even industry groups because it increases our country’s dependence on fossil fuels. I urge the Senator to oppose this outdated bill and focus on clean, renewable energy. Thanks.”

Bonus action: Ask your friends and family in other states to call *their* Senators about these issues. (Remind them that all they have to say is “I urge the Senator to vote no on any bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act.”)

2. Contact your Representative about bolstering voter rights.

  • Zoe Lofgren: (202) 225-3072 or (408) 271-8700
  • Ro Khanna: (202) 225-2631 or (408) 436-2720
  • Anna Eshoo: (202) 225-8104 or (408) 245-2339

As organizations like the ACLU and Lawyers for Good Government are tackling voter suppression from the legal angle (and please support them with donations!), there are several bills before Congress that would *promote* voting rights. If your Representative is Anna Eshoo or Ro Khanna (Zoe Lofgren is a co-sponsor of both bills, so you can skip this call if she’s your Rep), ask them to support HR 2876, the Automatic Voter Registration Act, and HR 3239, the bipartisan Voting Rights Amendment Act. Use this script:

I am deeply concerned about voter suppression and particularly the Commission on Voter Integrity led by Kris Kobach. The right to vote is a fundamental right of U.S. citizens. Instead of working to suppress voters, we should instead ensure that every eligible citizen is registered to vote and has access to the ballot box. I would like [name] to support voting rights and co-sponsor both the Automatic Voter Registration Act and the Voting Rights Amendment.

3. Contact your Assemblymember and urge them to fund affordable housing in California. Look up your Assemblymember here: http://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov, but likely Ash Kalra: (408) 277-1220, Evan Low: (408) 446-2810, or Kansen Chu: (408) 262-2501.

The California Senate recently passed SB 2, which would raise an estimated $250 million annually for affordable development with a $75 fee on real estate transactions. An op-ed in the Sacramento Bee points out, “California families face a harder time finding a place to live than at any point in our history and … homeownership rates in California are at their lowest since the 1940s. And more than 1.5 million households in California pay more than half of their income toward rent, leading to an enormity of overcrowded and unhealthy rental homes and income instability.” Call your Assemblymember and say:

I urge Assemblyman ___ to follow the Senate’s lead by passing SB 2. We in Silicon Valley understand better than most Californians how imperative it is to do something about the housing crisis, and the answer is to fund affordable housing. Thank you. [hat tip: Daily Action]

4. Make a public comment: Demand protections for net neutrality.

Contact the FCC to comment on the proposed new rules regulating the internet and demand the net remain neutral. Daily Grab Back sums it up nicely: “The latest skirmish in the Trump administration’s battle to sell critical public services to corporate oligarchs is at the FCC. The agency has proposed new regulations that will open the door for internet service providers to hold your access to Game of Thrones (or usajobs.gov or your state’s voter registration page….) for ransom. Pay, or have your access throttled. The comment period on these new, nasty regs is open until August 16, 2017.”

You can send your comments to the FCC using a nice form provided by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (https://dearfcc.org/) or go to this form: https://www.fcc.gov/ecfs/filings/express and, on the first line (“proceeding”), enter 17-108. Say this:

When I pay for Internet service, I expect protection from data discrimination, privacy invasion, and access restrictions. FCC Chairman Pai’s proposal risks my rights as a citizen. Corporations won’t do the right thing. I want the FCC to uphold all existing Title II net neutrality rules. Thanks. (Credit: Americans of Conscience/Jen Hoffmann)

5. Also make a public comment on neonicotinoid pesticides TODAY.

TODAY, July 24, is the LAST DAY to make a public comment on the use of neonicotinoid pesticides. Rogan’s List says: “The EPA is considering a ban on some of the most commonly used neonics, which studies have shown to be harmful to some bee populations (http://n.pr/2tpE4oU) Sum of Us has some helpful talking points we can use, as well as an easy-to-submit comment form at: http://bit.ly/2gQW6v5.”

6. Be ready to protest and demand that Congress take action if Trump fires Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Indivisible, Move On, Together We Will, and other resistance groups are making plans if Trump should fire Mueller. If this happens, the plan is to gather in protest at San Jose City Hall Plaza. If the news breaks before 11 a.m. our time, the rally would occur at 5 p.m. that day; if after that, the rally would happen at Noon the following day. Please note: “Everyone participating in this Event will be required to abide by all applicable laws and lawful orders of authorities. This Event will be nonviolent and will not involve any civil disobedience or other violation of law.”

Tell us how it goes in the comments below! Thanks for your activism – it matters!

Don’t forget you can contact your Senators and Representatives through phone (Call 1-844-6-RESIST), email (http://democracy.io), or text (text “Resist” to 50409).

Calls to Action for Friday, July 21

Can you make a few quick calls and fill out a form today? “Do not underestimate your power. Stay engaged. Fight on.” – Kamala Harris

1. Contact Reps Khanna, Lofgren, or Eshoo with two issues:

– Last week, spending for Trump’s border wall was approved by a committee and will now move to a full House vote. Let’s fight it! Secondly, let’s express support for maintaining the separation of church and state:

My name is ___ and I’m a constituent from (zip). I’m calling to express my strong opposition to any federal budget that funds the construction of a southern border wall. A border wall will not improve our border security and will cost taxpayers billions of dollars.

I also want to voice my opposition to the provision in the Financial Services appropriations bill that allows churches to endorse or fund political candidates tax-free. It is vital that we prevent churches serving as channels for dark money donations to political campaigns. Thank you.

  • Zoe Lofgren: (202) 225-3072 or (408) 271-8700
  • Ro Khanna: (202) 225-2631 or (408) 436-2720
  • Anna Eshoo: (202) 225-8104 or (408) 245-2339

2. Lend support to our Senators – this healthcare fight isn’t over:

Hello, my name is ___ and I’m a constituent from (zip). While I thank the Senator for opposing Trumpcare, I am counting on her to use every tool and tactic at her disposal to also delay and block the bill as a long as possible, and to obstruct the regular Senate business. Thank you.

  • Senator Harris: (202) 224-3553 or (415) 355-9041
  • Senator Feinstein (202) 224-3841 or (415) 393-0707

3. Protest offshore drilling along our beloved coast! Take a minute to fill out this form with the info below:

https://www.regulations.gov/docket?D=NOAA-NOS-2017-0066

Please maintain the vital protections established for California’s National Marine Sanctuaries such as the Channel Islands, Monterey Bay, Cordell Bank, and Greater Farallones for the benefit of wildlife, people, and our entire region. These sanctuary sites stand as compelling testimony to the decades of broad, bipartisan support expressed by our elected officials and the public. Thank you for your continued support and consideration.

TAKE ACTION

1. PROTECT IMMIGRANT FAMILIES BY SUPPORTING SB 54

SB 54, the California Values Act, or “Sanctuary State,” will prohibit certain kinds of local government participation with Federal ICE agents. The bill has been slowly but surely moving through Sacramento but it faces serious opposition from law enforcement. While our California state legislators are going on recess this weekend, it’s expected the bill will go to Assembly appropriations committee at end of August, to be followed by floor votes and signing by the governor in early September. Right now we can keep help the campaign grow their public support

TAKE ACTION: Here are some ways you can help support the bill this week:

Sign SB54’s Individual Endorsement Form: (This one is really important, if you fit this criteria) Do you work in any of the following professions: Educator, Health care professional, Librarian, Legal professional, Business leader, Faith leader, or Anti-poverty advocate. SB54 really needs your public support! Sign the statewide coalition’s Individual Endorsement Form HERE.

Sign these petitions: Several community partners are also hosting petitions to show public support. Sign the petitions here:

Share these actions on social media: Share these public actions on social media using the hashtags: #ICEoutofCA #CAValuesAct #SB54. Feel free to download and use the image below…

2. SPEAK UP TO PROTECT OUR NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARIES & MONUMENTS

The Trump administration continues to roll back environmental protections and wants to expand offshore drilling. What can we do? Tell the Department of Commerce that you want them to protect our marine sanctuaries and monuments. Act now! Public comment closes 7/26.

TAKE ACTION: Submit your response to this action in public comment here:

https://www.regulations.gov/docket?D=NOAA-NOS-2017-0066

ResistCute: Jo Jo and Jack

Becky’s domestic short hair feline friends, Jo Jo and Jack, have differing political aspirations: “Jo Jo is a drama queen with major attitude but she manages to win over everyone she meets. I am sure Jo Jo believes she should be the president and she would start her own political party. Jack is a very sweet boy, very food motivated. I know he’d be a bleeding heart liberal. He is quite tolerant and kind towards others.”

(Jo Jo is a “foster failure” from Town Cats of Morgan Hill; Jack comes from the San Jose Animal Care Center)

C2A  The Trump administration continues to roll back environmental protections and wants to expand offshore drilling. What can we do? Take action before July 26, 2017, to tell the Department of Commerce that you want them to protect our marine sanctuaries and monuments.
